Leslie strode from the kitchen, holding a tray with three mugs. “I made coffee,” she said, then grimaced at the sight of me—perks of living with an empath. “Thought we might be in for a long night.”

“Sebastian’s gone,” I said just as the front door opened behind me and he came inside. “Or not.” My annoyance—legit or curse-enhanced—knew no bounds.

“You need to leave,” I said. His presence would only distract me, which wouldn’t help anyone. I needed to focus and concentrate if I had to break this curse.

“No, I’ve decided I’m not going anywhere until Lily and you are safe.” He accepted a mug from Leslie and carefully sat it on a coaster on the end table.

Leslie’s face went blank for a moment, then she looked down, somewhat dazed.

Sebastian carried on. “I know the curse has made you angry with me, but we’ll just have to work through it. I need to be here.”

My mouth opened and words poured out before I could stop them. “Wouldn’t you rather be back at the castle. That’s where Cheney is and I would hate for him to realize he can actually live his life without you.”

His patient eyes met mine. “I’m staying. Abuse me as much as you want.”

“Abuse you? I haven’t even begun to abuse you,” I muttered as I chose a seat on the other side of the room.

“This is all just part of the curse.”

“Or maybe I’m sick of not saying what I think.”

All color drained from his face. “At least I can see past what I feel.”

“That’s because you don’t feel anything, you anus,” I snapped back, wanting so badly to storm off.

Sebastian rolled his eyes and crossed his legs. “I’m staying. Nothing you say makes any difference to me.”

I took a deep breath. “It never has.”

Leslie looked back and forth between us, then suddenly knelt down in the middle of the room. “I’m not feeling well.” She gripped the edge of the coffee table, exhaling slowly. “Can we stop fighting for a moment?” Sebastian and I watched her, silent as death. Finally, she looked up again. “Thank you—and yeah, no more fighting. Your energy is making me dizzy.”

I drew in air, slowly filling my lungs. I was stronger than the curse. I had to stop giving into it. My cheeks burned with the knowledge that I was probably the one in the wrong here, no matter how justifiably furious I felt. We had to work together, and I had to find a way to make that happen.

“You’re right,” I told Leslie. “I’m sorry. Let’s get started. I think we should rest tonight, then try some of the easy fixes tomorrow night. If they don’t work, we’ll dig deeper. And in the meantime, hopefully we figure out who’s behind this—or I don’t know how successful any of our attempts will be.”

Leslie nodded. “I was thinking something similar. However, if we can’t lessen the effects tomorrow or, better yet, break it, there are other things that might help. I was looking through the charm section.
